Oh No You Didn't!

We ALL say things and act in certain ways that others may not understand, comprehend or accept. And more often then not, the recipient of our words and actions never looks beyond the cause of why it was said or why a particular reaction was taken. And almost always, things between friends and acquaintances go unsettled causing a rift in the relationship.

Proof that I’m just as human as the next, there are times I react to situations and circumstances negatively. Sometimes I say things without thinking. Sometimes I react harshly. Sometimes I just simply scratch my head and wonder why I reacted the way I did either in speech or action. And sometimes I should simply shut the hell up or just not react at all.

Recently, I made two statements to two individuals that was heated. It’s not so much what I said, but how I said it. Both have called me on it. One asked for an explanation and when I did give one, in no uncertain terms called me a lier. The other felt that I had no “right” to feel the way I did. In my opinion, both were more concerned about their feelings being hurt (the all about me syndrome), thus caring less as to why I said what I did or why I felt the way I did. So both issue’s remains unsettled and will never be resolved.

I admit that the tone I used in delivering how I felt was harsh. On the other hand, what I said I will never apologize for. With this said; we ALL hate rejection, specially from our friends. Though my delivery may have been harsh it steamed from the fact that I felt brushed aside either because I was an inconvenience and because I didn't have the right to feel the way I did. Therefore, being called on how I said how I felt I’m okay with, but what I’m not okay with is that they not caring as to why.

My thing is this. If we are truly friends, it has to be understand that we’re not always going to come across like perhaps we should. There is going to be those occasions when things are said that is going to either dig or hurt. We don’t live in a perfect world and no one is 100% of the times going treat us perfectly. This is reality. To think or expect otherwise is being unrealistic.

Perhaps replacing behavioral expectations with a bit of understanding might lesson the impact in which the message was received, thus providing a sense of conformability in open dialogue. If this aspect is denied then resolve will never be a part of the relationship and eventually the relationship will fall apart.

Yes, we all want to live peacefully, without drama, and without pain. But since utopia is not going to be a part of this life we have to find ways in which we can get along. And in my case, I believe that if BOTH would take a little more time to listen rather than not accept or not want to hear as to why I’m feeling the way I do, then life would be so much easier to deal with and I wouldn’t still feel like I’m an inconvenience or have no right to feel the way I do.

Broken Foot

My buddy Steven fell at work today and broke his foot. After spending most of the afternoon in doctor offices he was sent home, foot in a cast and with a warning … Stay off the foot, absolutely no pressure on it what so ever and it will heal on its own. Otherwise, the foot would have to be operated on. He has an appointment next Tuesday with his orthopedic surgeon to see if he’s following instructions. When speaking to him this evening, he was in good spirits, but feeling the pain.

Final Bow

If you’ve been following my blog you will know that within the last month and a half life has been pretty rough. Since October 9th., I’ve been trying to keep my wits about me and my sanity in check. It sure hasn’t been easy! A couple of times I’ve lost it … my bipolar has kicked in and has taken me on a downward spiral. God, I hat it when it takes control of me … trust me, it ain’t pretty! Of course these spirals have been my fault because I would forget to take my medication. Once down the hatch I return from the dark side and once again I’m good to go. Since, I’ve not forgotten to take my medication.

My main headache is not having a car! Right after I got laid off my car broke down (it blew a head gasket). I panicked! Where I live a car is a necessity and with it being out of commission, hmm!, I freaked! Then of course with my income drastically cut I had to worry about how I was going to cover my monthly expenses. So, I had to make some choices, didn’t like them, but I had to decide what I was going to let go for now … even though it was broke down, I had to let go of my car and every expense associated with it (title loan, insurance payments and tag renewal). At least by giving these expenses up I would be able to somewhat manage until I found another job.

If it wasn’t bad enough to give up my independence, what made matters worse, certain “friends” have let me down in ways I thought they never would. For example; promising to transport me to and from the store, post office, bank and interviews, etc. I will be ready to go, however I sit and wait … they don’t call to cancel or they simply don’t show up. Other’s have literally raged on me about my buddy Steven stating that he isn’t doing for me as they think he should, thus trying to get me to reconsider my association with him. Then, what put the icing on the cake was being uninvited to Thanksgiving dinner because I couldn’t get there … they wanted me to ask one of my other friends to taxi me to and from. And last but not least, some individuals have been down right rude. Anyway, so much for friends, right?

I realize that I’m not the only one having to endure economic hardship! Everyone is feeling the pinch. It’s the harsh reality of our time. But what really hit me hard was the fact that certain individuals literally abandoned me … I’m talking individuals who I’ve stood by, helped, cared about, etc. This alone wore heavy on me and it wasn’t a comfortable place to be … feeling helpless, alone and rejected was emotionally crushing. I will never forget this period of time and the emotional stress certain individuals placed on me … Never! It will be hard to forgive and forget. Actually, it will be easy to forgive, but it certainly won’t be easyly forgotten.

The other day, a good friend of mine made the statement that he’d “rather have tricks in his life than bitchy friends. At least tricks don’t treat you like shit, but friends do.” Though I don’t totally agree with this, he does have a point! And as my buddy pointed out, “why in hell are you putting up with all this drama … get rid of it/them! If these individuals don’t care about you now they won’t in the future so move on!” I have to strongly agree! Life’s to short for drama and I truly hate drama queens. Plus, why keep giving only to be let down over and over again? Therefore, I’m going to heed the advice given and proceed accordingly … it’s time to clean house! If they don’t give a shyt, why should I!

There is one thing that I take great solace in … I know that God promises that He will not allow more than what I can handle. Course, at this time, my human nature struggles with this since I am having to figure out how I’m going to survive. Don’t get me wrong, I do strongly believe that God is looking out for me … He has never let me down! Therefore, without a doubt, I know that I’m going to be okay … with God’s help I will come through this. Just wish though that it would be in my time cause I’m sometimes a pretty inpatient guy. Nonetheless, it’s going to be okay!

So to summarize this whole ordeal, I’ve got to keep on top of my medication schedule. I’ve got to land an interview and a job offer after which I’ll be able to get a car … without a job, getting a car is next to impossible. I’ve got to stop giving a hoot and worrying about those who do not have my back … I’ve wasted to much time on this issue alone. I’ve got to concentrate on those who do. Believe me, Steven. Georgie and Robyn … these three guys have been real life savers. The emotional support these individuals have provided has been a God send and is what keeps me going. I will forever be indebted to them for their caring and giving of themselves.

Oh, if you’re wondering why I’ve removed all of the blogs relating to the past month and a half, well, simply put, I got tired of being constantly questioned as to whether or not I was forever referring to a particular individual … like everything I do and say is directed towards one person, not! Therefore, I decided to remove those older blogs and rewrite, thus resulting in this piece. And so to this one particular individual, yes, this entire paragraph is all about you. Course, I expect that you will find something that may refer to you throughout this piece, nonetheless this last paragraph is strictly dedicated to you Tammy as is the song below by Carly Simon ... don't know why, but it reminds me so much of you! (Video link below)

In closing, from this point forward, it is time to celebrate the Christmas season and prepare for the new year. I am finished with this portion of my life and am now moving forward … sailing with the wind at my back.

Setting The Record Straight!

This will not apply to most, but to those few of you who are either reading things into what I’ve written or said, I’d like to set the record straight cause somewhere along the line you’ve got your wires crossed and it’s PISSING ME OFF!.

First and foremost, Steven does not support me!!!! I do not ask him nor do I expect him to!!!! To assume* such is where you are mistakenly WRONG! Just because he and I are good buddies does not constitute that financial support is part of our relationship and even if it was, it’s really none of your business.

Yes, when he’s able he has help me out financially, however mainly emotionally during this time of personal uncertainty in my life … it's certainly more than those of you who are accusing him of deserting me have attempted. Therefore, stop thinking that he’s been allusive to my situation. Moreover, stop thinking that it’s his main responsibility to support me.

Some of the most hurtful things that have been uttered by some goes like this: 1) "He should be a man and step up to the plate." 2) "If he cares anything about you, then he should bail you out." 3) "Isn't he helping you out ... if not get rid of him." 4) "If he can't help you what good is he ... at least you know what kind of friend he really is." How dare you say or think such!?!

Last but not least, regardless of what and how you may think, Steven and I are very close buddies … nothing more! He’s like a brother to me. Furthermore, as for our private lives, it has no bearing on anything we do outside of his or my home, therefore get your minds out of the cutter and stop making our private lives an issue or a test of our commitment and friendship ... you may be totally disappointed to find that our lives is boring to your imagination and irresponsible assumptions.

Next time, if you have question about things in my life, please come to the horses mouth and get the facts rather than spouting off about something you have no clue about or understand. This in itself will alleviate the emotional stress you are heaping in my life at this time.

Thanks!

Expectations Burn Out

Yesterday was a frustrating day. The Mechanic was supposed to come pick up my car, but when I called him all I heard was due to family problems he couldn’t. I though to myself, what? That’s not my problem, I need my car fixed! Well, this sent me into an emotional spiral down fall. And for the rest of the afternoon I was just beside myself. Then I got to thinking!

Philip, WOW, slow down! Just because I got things prioritized in order to get where I need to be, I can’t expect other’s to fall into line. Plus, the man’s got a sick wife. Stop being so selfish! At this time, it’s not all about me! He’s never let me down before … he’ll get to it! With this I simmered down.

I tell you, this period in my life has sure brought me to my knees and has humbled my spirit! When I get my mind set on a plan of action, I expect everything to go accordingly … when it deviates it just throws me emotionally off balance and my bi-polar kicks in. Tell you, it ain’t pretty! Anyway, as the old saying goes; good things come to those who wait. Yes, I’d like to land a job … God only knows how much I would like that! But, reality is, when you turn you problems over to Him, sometimes I’ve just gotta wait … God works within His own timetable … not mine! All I’ve gotta do is trust that He has my back and that He’ll see me through. Like my buddy said; “things will fall into place … just let it happen!” “God will see you through!”

Later in the evening my buddy picked me up to hang out for a while … we had dinner, went for a walk on the pier, sat on the beach for a while, went grocery shopping and came back to my place for a while after which he went home. It was a nice and relaxing evening. It was the kind of evening where we simply unwound, got our frustrations off our chests then enjoyed the rest of our time together. Thankfully, the day ended on a positive note.

My Decision!

I know that many of you won’t agree with my decision. Some of you have already informed me that if I continue to remain faithful to my buddy that you would not continue our friendship. Well, guess that’s just the way life goes sometimes … just wished that if you were truly my friend you would support whatever decision I make. Oh, well, so be it! Guess our friendship wasn’t really all that after all!?!

If I lived my life according to your expectations then I would be doing myself a huge injustice, as well as to whoever I may be involved with … in this case my buddy. Yes, we’re not always going to agree with each other’s decisions or choices. Friendship isn’t about do as I say or else! Instead, friendship is about caring and allowing each person to follow their own heart, right or wrong. If it’s right, we rejoice … if it’s wrong, we comfort. Therefore, all I ask is that you respect my decision, support my choice, and allow me to find happiness that is right for me … in this case, what’s right for me is my buddy who has become my friend and with whom I am in love with.

This coming Saturday, he and I will be celebrating our one year anniversary. Like it is said; “the first year is the roughest.” How true this is! In the past year we’ve had our share of emotional ups and downs. We’ve had individuals who have tried to come between us. Yes, at times it has been painful, it has been challenging, it has been difficult. When I could have used some positive caring and support from my friends, it wasn’t there, which, above all, left me feeling alone and disappointed. Nonetheless, all I can say is; it’s all good! No matter what, we’ve weathered our differences and obstacles … this relationship works for us. And last but not least, during this past year we’ve had our share of exciting and memorable moments. If I had listened to and acted upon the negative I would have missed out on making memories that allows life to be a little less complicated and a whole lot less stressful.

Yup, this relationship works for me, it is good to me, and I look forward to each day ahead as our friendship continues to grow. Therefore, I ask for you to find it in your heart to support my decision and choice … remember, sometimes you can’t help who you fall in love with. In this situation, it’s all good!

Question

We all desperately want to believe our friends, lovers and partner’s are honest. But what if there’s a nagging realization in your heart that tells you otherwise? As the old saying goes, "Action's Speak Louder Than Words." So, would you confront the person, draw your own conclusion, or leave it be and allow time to reveal the answer to you? To add to this mix, what if you’ve already confronted the person with your question, who in turn became upset with you for asking it, yet answered it in a way as to distract you away from the original question thus leaving you hanging and afraid, not of the answer itself, but afraid that it may put a wedge in the relationship.

Please do one of two things or both. You can comment on the question by clicking on the comment link or go to the left side of my blog and reveal your answer in the "What To Do" poll box. Doing so will help me to decide what action I should take in resolving my unanswered question.

Thanks for your help.

LOVE?

For the last eight months I’ve been trying to figure out what it means to be in love again. First and foremost, I’ve forgotten that it ain’t easy. Secondly, it seems that love has become like a four letter word and replaced with the phrase “Friends with Benefits.” Guess it’s a 21st century thing!

Anyway, I have almost concluded that emotions can never be a part of being in love. It seems that in today’s world, emotions is more like a doormat. It’s no longer a relevant aspect of an ongoing meaningful relationship. While they screw your brains out the underlining expectation is that you can’t include elements like commitment, obligation, responsibility and respect.

Honestly, no matter how I may try and dismiss my emotions, I can’t! Call me old fashioned. Whether I’m in a relationship that includes an acquaintance, friend, lover or a life-long partner, there is a certain amount of emotions that comes with the territory. Like it or not, being in ones life entails emotions for if it didn’t then what worth is there in being in anyone’s life? I might as well live as a hermit and keep everyone at a distance, and most definitely leave love as a doormat at all cost for fear of being alone.

Like the lyrics in “Have You Ever Loved Someone” by Rascal Flatts (take a listen of it … see “I’m Feeling It”), I’ve certainly entertained the thought that “if love is really forever, I’m a winner at a loosing game.” So what am I to do? Do I go with the flow and void my life of eliments that doesn’t include commitment, obligation, responsibility and respect if I’m going to be with someone? No, not at all!

I’ve always been taught that being in someone’s life is a privilege and the privileges are never to be taken advantage of with unrealistic expectations. As for being in love, I’ve concluded that as long as I maintain my standard of commitment, obligation, responsibility and respect within the relationship is all that matters and here’s how I’m doing it:

1. Commitment … being sexual monogamous. I ain’t bedding down with every Tom, Dick and Harry that my partner may be hopping in the sack with ... I expect the same in return. Playing Russian Roulette with one’s health ain’t an option!

2. Obligation ... being honest at all cost. Deception in any form is destructive to a meaningful relationship. It is not unfair to expect open and honest communication from anyone in my life. Communication is key to surviving any relationship. Without it the relationship will eventually die.

3. Responsibility … caring for the other person. Everyone comes and goes in my life for a reason. While that individual is in my life I am responsible to and for them for they are a gift from God.

4. Respect … this is paramount in any relationship. First, I’ve got to respect myself before I can respect someone else. Also, respect is earned, not demanded. I must always respect each person’s place in life whether I agree or disagree with them. By respecting each other builds trust and in the long run mutual respect for the relationship.

My conclusion … “what’s love got to do with it?" Not a damn thing! Love is like a blanket, but if it doesn't include all of the four ingredients above then I believe that love will never be.

OOOOPPPPSSSS!!!!

This past week I was involved in an auto accident … yes, since I hit the vehicle in front of me it is automatically my fault even though the truck suddenly came to a scratching halt.

As for injuries, I sustained a few burses, upper body strain, and a concussion for which I was treated. Other than that I’m fine now and doing my best to pull myself out of this setback. As for the passengers in the truck, which sustained bumper damage and I'm sure the same type of injuries I did, are hopefully fine.

Thus far, I've given my insurance company a statement as to what I perceived happened. I’m pretty positive that they ain’t going to like me very much since they are going to have to pay. Anyway, my Ford Focus of eight years, if I fix my windshield the car is drivable which will buy me time to look for another. What really matters is that no one was seriously injured … thank God! (Updated 05/27/08)

Forever Friends

It is said that people come into your life for a reason. Throughout my life I have had many individuals enter and exit my world. Some have stayed for a short while. Some have stayed only during the time I have been in a particular area … some individuals are simply territorial friends. Once you move or relocate, specially out of state, they simply exit your life. Then there are those individuals who stick around. No matter where you go these individuals remain in your life and become life long friends.

I have listened to individuals who say, “Oh yeah, I can count my friends on one hand!” When I ask how many fingers, the typical response has been; “Oh, three, maybe four!” In today’s world it seems that most people have more acquaintances then they do friends. And in this modern society the word “Friends” has a whole new meaning associated with it … have you heard the term “Friends with Benefits*?” That’s right! “Friends with Benefits.” Now days when someone tells me that I am their friend, I have to stop and ask myself as to how they are interpreting my association. Am I a Friend or am I a “Friend?”

Another thing I’ve noticed is that most people want associations that doesn’t include ones entire personality and/or makeup. What makes one unique is no longer important. Everyone is looking for that perfect individual who has the right look, the right moves, the right everything. Relationships are often based on what type of profession you’re in, what kind of automobile you drive, where you live, ones age, and the list goes on. Now day’s, no one really wants to get to know, YOU. More often than not, associations are pretty much superficially based. Once YOU become you, then you’re discarded like a piece of trash. No wonder people have more acquaintances than they do friends. In today’s society, true friendships are far and few, if nonexistent. We as a society have become less tolerant of each other than we are of terrorists.

I have been lucky! Over the years, no matter where I’ve traveled or lived, I have been fortunate to have friends with staying power … I’m talking about Life Long Friends. No matter where I’ve been or what I’ve gone through, these individuals have had my back, and have been my source of reality. These individuals have stood by me through thick and thin, and I am eternally grateful to be associated with them. If it wasn’t for my True Friendships, my live would be shallow and lonely. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not about how many “friends” I could have, it’s the quality of Friends I have. George Washington said it so eloquently, “Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence.”

Compared to “Friends with Benefits” and Friends, “Friends with Benefits" can kiss my @ss! They are not welcomed in my life cause the “Benefits” they bring is shallow, unfulfilling, self-centered and usually filled with undesirable risks. So to the following; Emily, Eunice, Dan, Mit, Mitchell and Patsy, Ralph and Betty, I want to say that YOU and EVERYTHING that makes you unique, has been my source of joy, and being a part of your life has made my life richer and complete. Thank you for being my life long friend!

*Stritly a sexual relationship without any commitments.

Notes From My Journal

Waking up to the reality that my partner had deceased was one of the most devastating experiences of my life. After twenty-seven years of loyal companionship and partnership, facing the future alone was emotionally draining … actually freighting. Now three years down the road and reflecting back, my journey has been challenging as well as eye opening.

The first year was the rawest of my journey. Going from years of contentment, to care giver, to oops now what?, I quickly realized that my survival skills wasn’t as sound proof as I had thought. After all was said and done, reality quickly settled in and no matter how prepared I thought I was, I wasn’t. But by the grace of God, and the with the help of friends and family I survived and came through the most darkest time of my life.

The second year was finding my place at the table of life … re-entering the work force. After five years of taking care of John my employable skills were rusty and out dated. I had no clue as to what I could do to survive. But as any journey would have it, you begin by taking one step forward. I didn’t care what kind of work I had to engage myself in, I just needed a job. Well, my first job, installing a/c filters, I hated! Boy, did I hate it! Nonetheless, it was work and putting food on the table. Yes, I eventually quit this job!

During my down time I reflected on my past employable skills to see what professional field I had enjoyed the most and come to realize that I’ve always done well, as well as enjoyed the customer service/hospitality field. Well, I chose customer service and landed a job working for a local convenient store. Now talk about an eye opener! Believe it or not, I truly liked my job. I’ve meet some really good people and made some friends. But the downside was horrifying! People can be really cruel! I had alcohol, hot drinks, sodas, and food thrown at me cause I wouldn’t sell alcohol to individuals. I had my car vandalized. A gun pulled in my face. Theft was a big problem. Drug dealers and prostitutes doing business in the bathrooms … YUK! I tell you, as much as I liked my job, seven months down the road I found myself becoming really cynical towards people and I hated were my emotions were heading. Had it not been for my friend Tammy who nagged and prodded me to get out of the convenient store business, I would not be where I am today.

Today I am working in the hotel/restaurant industry. Last August, I took a job as a restaurant/banquet server at one of the local resorts and now I am gainfully employed with Tommy Bahamas. I’ve found my niche! Going to work, interacting with “normal” people, having fun, and making money is where it’s at for me. I AM GOOD AT WHAT I DO! Sure it has its downside, but overall working as a waiter has been rewarding, as well as satisfying. Right now I am learning about wins, I get to feast on great foods, I’ve meet some of the coolest people ever, and going home feeling righteously exhausted is a satisfying feeling to end a day. I wish, however, that I could say the same for my personal life … now this is where my eye have been really opened.

Aside from learning new employable skills I’ve had to learn new dating skills. I’m telling you, my eyes were opened to a whole new world unlike the one from which I came twenty-seven years ago … it was a rude awaking! Romance! Yeah, right! Candle light dinners and a romantic evening at home, not! In my opinion, dating today is like playing hopscotch of which I take no part of. Most have a revolving door policy … in this day and age of STD’s and AIDS, not a good policy! Many are simply down right rude and cruel … the “it’s all about me” mentality leaves little room for wanting to get to know someone on a personal level. Hate to say it, but some are simply not worth the air they breath.

As for my dating experience or inexperience, well, one individual turned out to being a stocker … have to say a clever one at that. Two other individuals were abusive, verbally as well as physically. I tell you, now days you cannot wear your heart on your sleeve for one minute, otherwise you’ll surely end up emotionally drained, broken and tossed aside like a piece of trash. Many a times I have thought it better to join a monastery. Nonetheless, amidst all the human rubbish it is possible to find a gem. And as much as some of my friends may disagree, I believe that I’ve found a gem in the rough. If it wasn’t for his friendship and guidance which keeps me grounded I would become bitter and hateful. Can’t say that I haven’t come close, cause there have been times where if murder was legal, I’d be headline news.

In life, there is always going to be the good and bad. Good friends who have stood by me through these years are priceless and my heartfelt thanks goes out to Mary, Tammy, Rob, Angie, Bob, Robyn and Lou, Michael, David, and Sean. If it wasn’t for you and the encouragement you’ve given me I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. You-all kept me going when I wanted to stop, kept me focused when I lost my way, and when I was down you put a smile on my face and a song in my heart. So from the bottom of all that I am, THANK YOU! God loves you and so do I! As for the bad, well, life ain’t always beautiful … a little rain has to fall sometimes, otherwise we wouldn’t know how good life can really be.

Yes, to this day I miss John a great deal … I always will! But now I am at peace. Comparatively, John is in a much better place and I look forward to that day when I get to see him again in that place where there is no sunset and no dawning. As for where I’m headed? Who knows! I am taking life one day, one step at a time, and with the wind at my back I am sailing forward while taking my place at the table of life.

My Buddy Sumo

Believe it or not, my boy weights 178lbs. That’s right, 178lbs! … he’s a BIG boy! Even the vet couldn’t believe his weight. At first the vet thought that I was feeding Sumo way to much and suggested putting him on a diet, as well as a twice a day walking schedule which I complied with. Well, Sumo’s been on a diet for the last two years along with his daily exercise, but hasn’t lost a pound. At his last vet visit it was determined that he’s in perfect health and that I could discontinue his weight watcher’s diet, however continue his daily walking routine. I’ve decided to continue the same schedule … if it don’t need fixing, don’t fix it!

Sumo LOVES his toys, chasing squrals, car riding, and hanging out at the doggy park. He came into my life seven years … was a birthday gift from my life-time partner, John. Sumo and I have been through a lot, but if it wasn’t for his companionship and unconditional love it would have been difficult for me to get through the darkest year (2006) of my life … Sumo is my closest buddy and companion.

Keeping It Simple

Blogging on Yahoo! became such a hassle, not only for those of you who wanted to view my blog site, but for me as well. It’s not a simple format and you are not able to keep everything in one place. For example, you blog on Yahoo!. If you want to put pictures or whatever on your site you have to go to another site, etc. Plus, the complaints about not being able to view my blog were overwhelming … yup!, you have to become a member of Yahoo! in order to view any blog. And understandably a lot of you aren’t or don’t want to become members just to view my blog.

Well, I like to keep things simple, therefore I went in search of a more simpler format where I could have everything I wanted to share in one place and where my friends don’t have to sign up for one thing or another in order to read my blog. Thank you Robyn for introducing me to this new blog site … I love it! So, here it is! It’s easy, just bookmark it, and when you want to see what’s going on in my life all you have to do is point and click, bam!, you’re ready to read. Oh, and feel free to add your comments and thoughts too. Enjoy!
