Gov. Jan Brewer ignored criticism from President Barack Obama on Friday and signed into law a bill supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in Arizona, the nation's busiest gateway for human and drug smuggling from Mexico.

With hundreds of protesters outside the state Capitol shouting that the bill would lead to civil rights abuses, Brewer said critics were "overreacting" and that she wouldn't tolerate racial profiling.

"We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act," Brewer said after signing the law. "But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation."

Earlier Friday, Obama called the Arizona bill "misguided" and instructed the Justice Department to examine it to see if it's legal. He also said the federal government must enact immigration reform at the national level — or leave the door open to "irresponsibility by others."

"That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe," Obama said.

The legislation, sent to the Republican governor by the GOP-led Legislature, makes it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. It also requires local police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal immigrants; allows lawsuits against government agencies that hinder enforcement of immigration laws; and makes it illegal to hire illegal immigrants for day labor or knowingly transport them.

The law sends "a clear message that Arizona is unfriendly to undocumented aliens," said Peter Spiro, a Temple University law professor and author of the book "Beyond Citizenship: American Identity After Globalization."

Brewer signed the bill in a state auditorium about a mile from the Capitol complex where some 2,000 demonstrators booed county Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox when she announced that "the governor did not listen to our prayers."

"It's going to change our lives," said Emilio Almodovar, a 13-year-old American citizen from Phoenix. "We can't walk to school any more. We can't be in the streets anymore without the pigs thinking we're illegal immigrants."

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund said it plans a legal challenge to the law, arguing it "launches Arizona into a spiral of pervasive fear, community distrust, increased crime and costly litigation, with nationwide repercussions."

Mexico has warned the proposal could affect cross-border relations. On Thursday, Mexico's Senate unanimously passed a resolution urging Brewer to veto the law.

"Police in Arizona already treat migrants worse than animals," said Francisco Loureiro, an activist who runs a migrant shelter in the border town of Nogales, Mexico. "There is already a hunt for migrants, and now it will be open season under the cover of a law."

The bill will take effect in late July or early August, and Brewer ordered the state's law enforcement licensing agency to develop a training course on how to implement it without violating civil rights.

"We must enforce the law evenly, and without regard to skin color, accent, or social status," she said. "We must prove the alarmists and the cynics wrong."

Brewer, who faces a tough election battle and growing anger in the state over illegal immigrants, said the law "protects every Arizona citizen."

Anti-immigrant anger has swelled in the past month, after rancher Rob Krentz was found dead on his land north of Douglas, near the Mexico border. Authorities believe he was fatally shot by an illegal immigrant possibly connected to a drug smuggling cartel.

Arizona has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants, and its harsh, remote desert serves as the corridor for the majority of illegal immigrants and drugs moving north into the U.S. from Mexico.

U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Democrat, said he closed his Arizona offices at noon Friday after his staff in Yuma and Tucson were flooded with calls this week, some from people threatening violent acts and shouting racial slurs. He called on businesses and groups looking for convention and meeting locations to boycott Arizona.

The bill's Republican sponsor, state Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, said Obama and other critics of the bill were "against law enforcement, our citizens and the rule of law."

Pearce said the legislation would remove "political handcuffs" from police and help drive illegal immigrants from the state.

"Illegal is illegal," said Pearce, a driving force on the issue in Arizona. "We'll have less crime. We'll have lower taxes. We'll have safer neighborhoods. We'll have shorter lines in the emergency rooms. We'll have smaller classrooms." -Yahoo News

Obama calls the Arizona immigration law “misguided” and could lead to “irresponsibility by others”. And Rep. Grijalva, a Democrat, is calling for a boycott of the state. What? Is Obama and Grijalva stupid or what? Illegal’s are a nuisance to our society and economy, and they don’t deserve to share in our prosperity unless they become a citizens.

If anyone is “misguided” it’s our President and law makers, specially the Democrats. These are the ones who practice “irresponsibility” in not listening to their continuance who are demanding stricter laws to deal with illegal immigration. In other wards, we, the citizens, want them out of our country … here’s a ticket now get the hell out of the U.S.

As for fears of abuse, my thing is this; if you’re a U.S. citizen then you have nothing to worry about … illegals, you sure better worry cause we’re coming after you. If we catch you, you’re out of here … no questions asked. And no constitutional rights either! You’re here illegally so you have no rights, period, end of story.

I believe Arizona got it right … at least someone is standing up for what’s right. And I hope other stats will follow suite.

American Tea Party

I’ve always wondered why the political system in the U.S. only had two parties … Democrats and Republicans. Oh yeah, three, if you count the Independents. As divers as America is you would think that the political spectrum would have more parties than it does. Therefore, after the recent election I was elated to see the American Tea Party form. After all, with how our representatives are acting and passing laws, which most don’t agree with or don’t want, I included, the American Tea Party seemed to be a viable alternative.

In the beginning I did sign up with the Tea Party cause I really liked their message. However, now that the Tea Parties are well organized into a major political contender I’m really dissatisfied and horrified with what's going on within. My concern, rather than being a positive contender the American Tea Party is acting less and less American. My opinion, it seems that they are nothing more than Klan members without the white robes.

Yes, I disagree with President Obama on many issues and his dream for America is scary. But I do not voice my opinion in negative ways by carrying monkeys, which is in reference to our President, nor do I portray him as some joker, clown or African tribal witch doctor. For me, the color of the man’s skin does not sway me to dislike the man or fear his ideology. It is his dream for me and you which I oppose. If he was white I would feel the same way. Nevertheless, the American Tea Party is looking more and more like a far right wing fringe group who’s ideology is bigoted and racist. And if this party gains momentum towards the upcoming elections and does have a major impact on the political landscape then as American’s we have lots to be concerned about.

I, like most, would like to see the majority of our representatives kicked out of office. As a matter of fact, I believe we should dissolve our government and start over. The two parties that now “run” our country, is in my opinion, full of it and does not serve the American people … they are untrustworthy in every aspect of their “rule” and it’s time to clean house before they lead us into a political stand that is slowly becoming un-American. Like a t-shirt of mind reads, “If I don’t vote will they go away?” is truly how I feel about all of our so called elected officials. I do not believe that I am adequately represented and as a citizen it pisses me off that I have to pay taxes to a government I find out of touch and self-serving.

If I had to choose a party it would have to be the Independent Party. At one time I was a proud Democrat, but they no longer hold to values that I consider relevant. As for being a Republican … O hell no! Both parties have lost their significance and I do not believe either have much to offer me, you, or the world. As an Independent it gives me freedom in which I can voice my vote on issues I believe is best for our country rather than locking myself into a one singular parties ideology.

As for the American Tea Party, as far as I’m concerned, they can have Sarah Palin … this woman is a buffoon. Her ideology perfectly matches the Tea Party movement and its rather racy ideology. And as long as Sarah and the movements ideology remains within itself and doesn’t infect the rest of the more sound voters, whom I hope will change the course of our country before it becomes a Socialist United States of America, then I believe our future will have a chance for survival and our America will once again be strong and a major contender on the world stage.

Remember, the world is watching, in particular those who are bent on our destruction. It is time to fire our current leaders and change how business is conducted … it can no longer be business as usual.

It’s about time!

Five Signs You May Be Dating an E-Cheater

These days if you are single and NOT dating online, you may be missing out. Over 40 million Americans (that's about half the single population) are looking for love in cyberspace. Gone are the days of having to pretend that "er... Aunt Sally set us up!" At this point, most of us know someone who has found a great long-term relationship as the result of being on an online dating site.

What we don't hear about as much is the number of people dating online who are not single. Some estimate that close to one-third of those dating online are, in fact, otherwise attached.

There are a number of reasons why people who are already in a relationship go online to find love (or more realistically, a fling), but that is for another installment. For now, you need to protect yourself so you don't end up being misled by a person you really like who is e-cheating.

Consider these five questions to determine if you are with someone who is already... with someone.

#1. When do you communicate with each other?

Noticing your date's schedule is the first step in spotting an e-cheater. Are you communicating with your date at odd hours -- very early in the morning or very late at night? Have you ever spoken during peak times, like between 7-10 p.m. during the week? What about the weekends? If your date is only free to see or call you at odd hours and rarely around on the weekends, take note.

Even if this person isn't e-cheating: A person who is never free to speak or meet at peak times, perhaps because he/she is a workaholic, is still unavailable!

#2. Are you confined to emails and texts?

While it's true that some people hate the phone, make sure to have at least a few phone conversations with your date at peak times. And a word of caution: if you have enjoyed intimate online chats for more than a month but have never met in person, that's a warning sign. Typed words are no basis for a relationship! Whenever possible, communicate three to five times before booking a live date, and then go outside and get offline.

Even if this person isn't e-cheating: There's no point in communicating online for months on end. Doing so only increases expectations and decreases your chance for a spark when you finally meet.

#3. Have you met your date's friends, family, or co-workers?

Have you seen your date in his/her world? Of course you likely won't meet your date's network right away. But after a few months of dating, it is a valid concern if you have never met people connected to him/her.

Even if this person isn't e-cheating: If you've dated for months and your partner does not want to introduce you to others, it doesn't matter whether or not he/she is single; you should be concerned that you are not meeting people close to him/her.

#4. Have you been to your date's home?

After a few months of dating, your partner should have shared his/her home with you. I have a client who used to tell me that the guy she was dating was so romantic. He flew into her hometown every month on business and would invite her to hotels all over the city for dates. Turns out this guy -- who she thought was flying into Canada from the U.K. -- lived 30 minutes away from her with his wife and two kids.

#5. Do you trust your intuition?

Bottom line: you have a better sense than anybody does about what feels right. It is true that people who have nothing to worry about in a relationship rarely question their partner's fidelity. If you have an "off" feeling, trust your gut and investigate further. There's likely a good reason why you are questioning where you stand. –Yahoo Personals

A Great Idea

A possible and easy solution to the controversy over full-body scanners at airports. The idea is so simple that it is really quite brilliant.

It would be a win-win situation for everyone, and it would eliminate racial profiling. The method would also eliminate a long and expensive trial. Justice would be really fair and swift. Case closed!

The idea/solution? Have a booth before entering the airport terminal where each person and luggage must go into which will not x-ray a person, but will detonate any explosive device one might have on her/his body and/or luggage. Also, the only "carry-on" in clear plastic bag allowed inside the passenger cabin would be medication(s), toothbrush/small tube of toothpaste, comb, personal documents [license, credit card, passport/boarding pass, money] reading material [book/newspaper], laptop/DVD player; everything else must be checked-in luggage.

Imagine . . . in the airport terminal a muffled explosion is heard. Shortly thereafter, an announcement comes over the PA system; "Attention all standby passengers! A seat is now available on airline name and flight number."

Isn't that really cool?

Liz Gilland

Horry County Council Chairwoman Liz Gilland did not meet the deadline to pay her penalties issued by the S.C. State Ethics Commission, according to the commission's debtor list.

After Gilland missed a hearing with the commission in July, she was hit with more than $300,000 in fines for failing to correctly file a quarterly campaign finance disclosure form from her 2006 campaign and failing to address the commission's concerns, which were sent in numerous certified letters. The fines continued to accrue interest daily, reaching more than $360,000 before Gilland filed the missing documents in November.

After an appeal in January, Gilland's fine was dropped to $45,000 and she was given 60 days to pay or else a judgment against her for that amount would stand. The fine was one of the largest ever given by the commission.

Gilland had until Wednesday to pay the fine, according to Cathy Hazelwood, deputy director and general counsel for the Ethics Commission. The fine will not revert to the original amount, but if Gilland sells property or conducts a number of other financial transactions, the judgment will be fulfilled through that money, Hazelwood said.

Gilland, who announced that she will not seek re-election this year, said she plans to pay the fine, but the tight deadline was an unrealistic expectation. She has said she is considering holding a concert or fundraiser this summer to help pay some of the penalties. The penalties on the debtor list as well as the judgment in the county's public court records were not updated as of Wednesday to reflect the change in the amount of the penalty or the judgment. –Sun News

Yeah, after claiming that God is leading her in a different direction thus won’t be running for office, maybe it would be right if she went right to jail … Christian woman? Yeah right! She’s a criminal and should not be allowed to hold office let alone claim such nonsense like being an upright Christian? If she was a “true” Christian then she would have paid her fine! Politicians! New Boardwalk Due To Open In MB

The Myrtle Beach boardwalk will open May 15 in time for a beach music festival, according to local officials and Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce representatives.

The boardwalk should be ready before the festival, barring any complications, Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes said.

The event will include a ribbon cutting for the boardwalk and several performances from beach music acts including Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Billy Scott and the Prophets and Ben E. King.

The event is one of four planned for May, and admission is free. The events are part of the city's efforts to attract more tourism for the month. Tourism slumped last May after the city took steps to limit bike rallies that regularly take place at that time.-Sun News

Christian Festival Set For Late May In MB

A Christian music festival is coming to Myrtle Beach in May, officials announced Tuesday, one of several new events in a month that used to be dominated by bikers.

The Beach Blast Christian Music Festival will be May 22 on the former site of the Myrtle Square Mall. The event lineup includes musical acts TobyMac and Kutless and a speech from David Nassar. Tickets are $25 in advance.

The festival is the first of four to be announced as part of a lineup to promote spring tourism, said Ryan Swaim, chairman of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce's marketing committee. The events will help fill hotels in the spring, a season that has slowed in recent years, he said.

The festivals mark a transition for a month traditionally dominated by motorcyclists. The city lost the revenue of more than 300,000 bikers in 2009 after making a series of efforts to discourage the May bike rallies.

The festivals "are not going to raise occupancy just by themselves, but they'll be an important part of building spring occupancy to levels we've seen in the past," Swaim said.

Premier Festivals promotes Christian music festivals. The chamber will provide marketing and advertising for the event, said Tina Pace, the chamber's marketing manager. -Sun News

Courts Wage Battle On Animal Cruelty

A veterinarian at St. Frances Animal Center told staff members not to get attached to a sick puppy that came to the shelter last year, because it wasn't clear whether the neglected animal would survive.

"He was so sick. He didn't make any noise or come out of his crate," said Debbie Clement, office manager at St. Frances Animal Center in Georgetown.

After about a week, Dawson, an emaciated, bloated Shih Tzu, who had a skin infection and injured eye, exited the crate.

"That's how we knew he was better," said Clement, who is Dawson's foster mom. "He finally got out of his crate and walked down the hall into my office."

Dawson is one of several abused and/or neglected animals that the shelter has seen. Shelter officials say Dawson's injuries were the result of pure neglect.

"As social as he is with people, he had a family that did that to him," center manager Shannon Prouty said of the pup.

Georgetown County authorities handled 11 animal cruelty cases in 2009, including three that are pending, one that resulted in a not guilty ruling, and seven that ended with convictions, according to the Georgetown County Magistrate Court.

In Horry County, there were 27 animal cruelty cases filed last year, 25 that resulted in convictions, and two were dismissed, according to the Horry County Magistrate Court.

Myrtle Beach animal control officer Steven Trott said the city handled 5,000 calls last year, and 2,000 were cruelty complaints. The complaints ranged from a dog not having water to the death of a dog due to emaciation or malicious intent.

Punishments for animal cruelty can vary from fines to time in prison.

Animal cruelty "is a major problem, but not at the level people think," said Wayne Brennessel, executive director of the Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Columbia. "We mainly see where people don't provide proper care for animals. We don't hear of a lot of cases of people being physically abusive to animals. It's more neglect or not proper knowledge of how to care for animals."

A Myrtle Beach woman is awaiting a jury trial after she was charged in January with allowing a third dog in her care to die. That death occurred two days after she was convicted of the same charge for the deaths of two other dogs, according to officials with the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office.

Ellyn Jamie Johnson's case will be prosecuted in magistrate court, and she could have an initial appearance in court at the end of this month, solicitor Greg Hembree said. No specific date is set for her trial.

A Loris man who also is charged with two counts of first-offense ill treatment of animals after four dead dogs were found on his property is expected to appear in court May 7, either to plead guilty or go to trial, Hembree said.

Police suspected that Edward Theron Casselman, 82, poisoned the dogs because witnesses said the dogs died shortly after being fed, officials said. Casselman denied the claims but was arrested. He made an initial appearance in general sessions court on March 19, Hembree said.

Brennessel said people can do much to prevent animal cruelty by understanding state law, and educating themselves and their neighbors on how to properly care for animals. He also said there's a need for more education, which could come at schools, churches and civic groups.

"There's a steady increase in more calls for service because more people are becoming diligent and aware of animal cruelty through education," Trott said.

Brennessel said people should be concerned if an animal doesn't get fresh water two to three times a day, if an animal doesn't have shelter and/or access to shelter, and if one can see the animal's ribs or hip bones.

"There's a very good chance an animal neglected or abused can be rehabilitated," Brennessel said. "You just have to put them in the right situation where they get the right training and love because they are animals eager to please.''

At St. Frances, Dawson, who was brought in two days before New Year's Day after a woman found him on the curb in Georgetown walking into the street, is a good example. He was blind, said Prouty, who said Dawson's right eye had to be removed because it was infected from injury. His surgery was Feb. 1.

In another case, the owner of Popeye and Patches, a pair of English bulldog boxer mixes, kept both dogs on chains about 3 feet long, Prouty said. She said animal control went to the owner's home after a resident reported animal abuse at that location.

Officials were able to save Popeye, who was emaciated and dehydrated when he was taken to the shelter Feb. 13, 2009. His brother, Patches, was severely starved and had other injuries that prevented him from being saved, Prouty said. She said the dog's owner was charged with cruelty and neglect, Prouty said.

"That is the type of thing we see here that the public is not aware of," Prouty said as she recalled a recent incident in which someone poured gasoline on a dog and set him on fire. "That happens in your neighborhood, in your backyard. It kills us every time you see something like that." -Sun News

Beach First National Bank To Close

A federal agency has taken control of Beach First National Bank.

The Office of Comptroller of the Currency appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as the receiver for Beach First National Bank today. The bank closed today at 5 p.m., and employees from the FDIC entered the building.

The Myrtle Beach based bank had $585.1 million in total assets and $516 million in total deposits on Dec. 31, 2009, according to the FDIC. The OCC found that the bank had a significant decrease of assets and earnings due to unsafe and unsound practices.

The OCC also found that the bank incurred losses that depleted its capital and there is no reasonable prospect that the bank will become adequately capitalized without federal assistance, according to a news release that was posted on the door.

A news release from the FDIC said the seven branches of Beach First will reopen on Monday as branches of Bank of North Carolina. Customers will have access to their funds in Beach First over the weekend. –Sun News

XXX Factor

Most nights, after his wife, Kate, had gone to bed, Tom surfed the Internet for porn. Kate learned about this during their second session of couples therapy. Despite Tom’s claims that his nocturnal habit had nothing to do with heir love life, she worried he preferred porn to having sex with her.

That’s a common reaction. “often, one partner has a porn interest, and the other thinks that’s a problem,” says Russell Stambaugh, PhD, an Ann Arbor, Michigan-based psychologist and sex therapist. “It rarely is. The best studies suggest that only about 5% of porn users have a problem that interferes with their daily life.”

That’s good news, because a lot of people look at porn. According to the May 2004 Tracking Survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 26% of male Internet users visited adult websites (only 3% of women went to these sites). In 2006, the porn industry raked in nearly 13 billion dollars.

For most women, there’s no need to worry. Whatever may be drawing a man to porn, it’s seldom a reflection on his partner, says sex therapist Lonnie Barbach, PhD, in practice in San Francisco. “Some women feel threatened because they don’t think they’re as sexy as a porn star,” she says. “But it’s not about what he’s not getting at home. It’s the novelty. It’s a turn-on.

Still, the question remains: Why do so many men like looking at pictures of naked people? That’s not an easy question to answer. Porn-induced arousal has been linked to many parts of the brain. One recent theory holds that mirror neurons, brain cells that fire when an action is performed as well as when it’s observed, play an important role in male arousal. But knowing what’s fired up by porn doesn’t tell us why our brains get turned on.

Stambaugh points to evolution. Men’s brains, he says, are hard-wired for easy arousal, so that men are ready for sex whenever opportunity knocks-a progagation-of-the-species thing. With online porn so readily at hand, vicarious opportunities-cue the mirror neurons-are ever present.

Once Kate realized that porn was not her replacement and Tom felt less ashamed about his habit, the couple talked more easily about their sex life. And that led to sexy outfits and a little experimentation in the bedroom. The porn was never the problem, Stambaugh says. “More often, the problem is how you talk and how you reveal yourself to each other.”

Safety First … Unsafe sex is common in porn. It shouldn’t be in your bedroom.

Time and Money … If you’re spending too much of either on porn, it often reflects a larger problem, like marital difficulties or a job loss.

The Great Reneger

Montebello High School in California

You will not see this heart-stopping photo on the front page of the NY Times, nor on the lead story of the major news networks.

The protestors at Montebello High School took the American flag off the school's flag pole and hung it upside down while putting up the Mexican flag over it.

I predict this stunt will be the nail in the coffin of any guest-worker/amnesty plan on the table in Washington. The image of the American flag subsumed to another and turned upside down on American soil is already spreading on Internet forums and via e-mail.

Pass this along to every American citizen in your address books and to every representative in the state and federal government.

If you choose to remain uninvolved, do not be amazed when you no longer have a nation to call your own nor anything you have worked for left since it will be 'redistributed' to the activists while you are so peacefully staying out of the 'fray'. Check history, it is full of nations/empires that disappeared when its citizens no longer held their core beliefs and values. One person CAN make a difference.

The battle for our secure borders and immigration laws that actually mean something, however, hasn't even begun.

If this ticks YOU off … PASS IT ON! IF IT DOESN'T IT SHOULD!

At The Bus Stop

At a crowded bus stop with many people eager to get on the bus as the bus door opened, a woman tried to get on, when she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her to raise her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus.

Somewhat embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little thinking that it would give her enough slack to raise her leg. She tried but only to discover that she still could not.

So, a little more embarrassed, she once again reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little more. But again, to her chagrin, she could not raise her leg.

For the third time, she reached behind her as she once again smiled at the bus driver, and unzipped her skirt a bit more.

At this time, a big guy from Texas who stood behind her, and who was also waiting to board the bus, grabbed her by the waist and lowered her gently on the bus' first step.

This made her go ballistic. She yelled at the would-be good Samaritan, "How dare you touch my body! I don't even know who you are!"

The Texan smiled at her and drawled, "Well, Ma'am, normally I would agree with you. But after you unzipped my fly three times, I kinda figured we was friends."
