Orville Smith, the store manager of a Best Buy computer store in Augusta, Georgia alerted the store's security when he observed a male customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta, on the store's surveillance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket. When confronted, then man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled out a knife, and ran out of the door.
Outside on the sidewalk in front of the store were four U.S. Marines helping to collect toys for the Toys for Tots program. Smith said the Marines helped to stop the man who was being chased by the Best Buy security guards whereupon he stabbed one of the Marines, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back. Someone dialed 9-1-1, and upon the paramedics' arrival, they transported the injured Marine to the nearest Emergency Room, where his injury was found to be non-life threatening.
According to the police report, the assailant was also transported to the same hospital where he was found to have two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw---injuries which he sustained when he slipped and fell off the curb after stabbing the Marine and being subdued by the three other Marines.
The Best Buy management thanked the Marines for their assistance in taking down and holding the attacker and thief.
