Frank Schaeffer is an American author, film director, screenwriter, public speaker and painter. He is the son of the late theologian and author Francis Schaeffer. He is also a self-proclaimed “former member of the Religious Right and Republican Party.”
On April 6, 2016, Schaeffer decided to make a video describing what made him leave the GOP and express his appreciation to Barack Obama whom Schaeffer now calls “a great president.”
In the beginning of the short video, Schaeffer blasts angry viscous racists...
“...who are trying to get back at Obama who committed the faux pas of being a black man, who also brought our country back to economic health, ended two wars, kept our country stable and prosperous during a time when he inherited the worst situation possible from probably the biggest fool we’ve ever had for a president.”
The artist adds his son, a Marine, was sent to the Iraq war, which was “an unnecessary war.” Scheffer’s son made it back safe, but many of his son’s friends did not. Schaeffer says he left the party because he “couldn’t stand the hatred anymore, the anti-gay bias, the anti-black bias, the anti-women bias and the kind of bullshit Donald Trump is spouting.” Schaeffer in his tribute talks about how President Obama has forged ahead in spite of these obstacles.
“In spite of seven years of obstruction — by Republicans with nothing better to do than try to ruin our country by hamstringing a great president...
In spite of all that, the reform of healthcare has worked and is working. In spite of all that, the economy is up. In spite of all that, the stock market is doing well. In spite of all that, American businesses are dong well. In spite of all that, our standing in foreign countries is very high compared, for instance, to what it will be if an idiot like Ted Cruz or this pompous ass Donald Trump takes over.”
Schaeffer ends the video with this personal message to President Obama:
“As a former religious right activist, Sir, who did his best to stop Dems from being elected 30 years ago, I’m so glad I got a chance to vote for you twice. Thank you for seven and a half wonderful years where you kept balance and kindness, in spite of everything thrown at you. You’re a great president. History is on your side, Sir. You’re going to be vindicated and maybe sooner than you think.”
In conclusion, Schaeffer adds no current candidate will be able to measure up to President Obama. That may not settle well with some. But for many of us, Schaeffer is right. We may never see another president, in our lifetimes, as great as President Obama. It’s hard for some of us to even imagine him no longer in office. Cheers to Frank Schaeffer for this tribute to a much loved President Barack Obama. –Daily Kos
