The Young Gunslinger And The Old Prospector

An old prospector shuffled into a desert town leading an old tired mule. He headed straight for the only saloon to soothe his parched throat. After having tied his old mule to the hitch rail, he tried to brush off dust from his face and clothes when a cocky young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other.

The young fellow looked at the old man and asked with a devilish laugh, "Hey, old man, have you ever danced?"

The older man looked at the young gunslinger and said, "No, I never did...never really cared to..."

A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned impishly and said, "Well, you're gonna dance now." And he started shooting at the old man's feet.

The old prospector not wanting to get a toe blown off, started hopping around like a flea on a hot skillet. Everybody laughed at the sight.

The young man continued shooting until he had fired his gun's very last bullet. And while still laughing, he holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon.

Meanwhile, the old prospector walked to his pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled shotgun, and cocked the gun's hammer. The clicks reverberated loud and clear in the dry desert air for everyone in the crowd to hear.

The crowd stopped laughing immediately.

The young gunslinger heard the sounds too, and he turned around very slowly. The silence was almost deafening as the next scene unfolded.

The crowd watched as the young gunman alternately stared at the old timer and the large gaping holes of the twin barrels. The shotgun never wavered in the old man's hands, as he asked, "Son, have you ever licked a mule's ass?"

The young gunslinger swallowed hard and said, "No, sir."

The old man then told the young fellow to walk to the mule's rear and said, "Now is your chance."

There are at least five (5) lessons to learn from the story:
  • Never be arrogant or cocky.
  • Don't waste ammunition.
  • Alcohol can make you think you are smarter than you really are.
  • Always make sure you know who has the real power.
  • Respect old folks -- they are smarter and wiser than you think.
