GAO: $460 Million Food Stamp Benefits Went to Households Ineligible Under Federal Limits
The Government Accountability Office has identified $460 million dollars in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamp, benefits that went to households with incomes over the federal SNAP eligibility limits.
The recently released report explains that for fiscal year 2010, states which have expanded eligibility for SNAP through broad-based categorical eligibility (BBCE) made 473,000 additional households eligible SNAP benefits, resulting in an estimated $38 million a month in extra costs, or $460 million in total. –By Caroline May/Fox News/August 3, 2012
Court Upholds Domestic Drone In Citizen's Arrest
A North Dakota court has preliminarily upheld the first-ever use of an unmanned drone to assist in the arrest of an American citizen.
A judge denied a request to dismiss charges Wednesday against Rodney Brossart, a man arrested last year after a 16-hour standoff with police at his Lakota, N.D., ranch. Brossart's lawyer argued that law enforcement's "warrantless use of [an] unmanned military-like surveillance aircraft" and "outrageous governmental conduct" warranted dismissal of the case, according to court documents obtained by U.S. News. -By Jason Koebler/The Washington Times/August 2, 2012
NYT: Media Accepts Government Censorship
There was a rather low-key confession made in the New York Times last week that deserves to be blared throughout this country so that every American understands what they are reading in the establishment’s ultra-controlled, government-managed “press” — and I use that last word loosely indeed.
The admission came in the form of a story by Jeremy Peters on the politics page of the Times July 16. I’ve been waiting for others to point it out, discuss it, debate it, express shock and exasperation over it. But I’ve waited for naught.
What this shocking story reveals is that even I — one of the kingpins of the new media and a refugee from the state-controlled spin machine – underestimated the utter and total corruption of the euphemistically called “mainstream press.”
It shows that most — not some — members of the print media establishment with access to the White House submit their copy to government officials for review, “correction” and approval before it reaches the American people! -By Joseph Farah/The Washington Times/July 22, 2012
Are You At Risk For Medical Identity Theft?
Your doctor’s office should be one of the places you feel safest. After all, they can heal all your ailments and are generally someone you can trust, right? But what if your doc could be putting your personal information and records at risk? According to the Ponemon Institute’s Third Annual National Study on Medical Identity Theft, an estimated average of 2 million Americans are victims of medical identity theft yearly.
“There are some things doctors are doing that violate HIPAA (patient privacy) laws and could be compromising your personal information,” says Dr. Michael Nusbaum, President and Founder of MedXCom, the leading Medical Records App for physicians. “If a doctor is texting other doctors about patients on his or her cell phone, speaking to patients on a cell phone in a public place, calling the pharmacy with your information on a cell phone or unsecure line, or doing Skype consultations with patients where anyone can walk into the room, these are all clear privacy violations,” Dr. Nusbaum says.
Here are his top tips for keeping your personal information safe and secure.
1. Keep everything locked up: Anything with identifying information should be treated as if it were a bank statement, Dr. Nusbaum says. “Don’t keep copies of your medical or health insurance records in your office, purse ,or any other vulnerable spot. Anyone can copy this and use the information. Also, always shred your health insurance forms, prescriptions, and health documents if you do not plan on saving them in a safe, locked place.”
2. Skip the paper trail: Instead of a folder full of papers, “store valuable health information electronically on a HIPAA- compliant, trusted site such as MedXVault,” Dr. Nusbaum recommends. “Also investigate online, secure sites that will allow you to hold documents in a secure format in one place where you control the access to those records.” -The Big Health Report/July 25, 2012
