When Bullied Kids Grow Up

Mike Sarkany has been hiding from bullies for a long time.

Since fifth grade, other children mistreated him at school -- beating him up on the playground, blocking his way in the hall, throwing balls a little too hard. No one believed him. Teachers told him to stand up for himself, but he didn't know how. His solution: Try to avoid anyone who might mistreat him.

Now he's 57, but he still harbors the same anger and fear that he did as a bullied child. He lives alone and tries to minimize interactions with others because he's still wary of being treated cruelly and feels he never learned how to deal with it.

"I just wanted to go to school and enjoy the experience. I just tried to not be involved. I didn't do anything to anybody. The more you try to get away from everybody the more they'd bother you," he said. –Read more at CNN Health

In August, the FDA told consumers not to eat frozen mamey fruit pulp after at least nine people in California and Nevada fell ill with typhoid fever. –Read more at CNN Health

Residents Can Get Tested For HIV As They Wait For Driver’s License

A Department of Motor Vehicles branch in southeast Washington is offering testing for the disease under a pilot program aimed at educating residents and reducing stigma.

"We realize that this is a nontraditional setting, but this program is about normalizing HIV and extending testing opportunities," said Angela Fulwood Wood, chief operations officer for nonprofit Family and Medical Counseling Service. "We chose the DMV because it offers a good cross-section of people." -Read more at CNN Health

Are Once-Happy Boomers Behind Rise In Midlife Suicide?

"I hate him. I'm so mad. I love him. I miss him. I want him back," Christine Lopez's thoughts twisted and churned.

Questions swirled. A void swelled. And their 4-year-old son tugged at her, asking about Daddy.

Her husband committed suicide in 2007.

"It's not like he died in a traffic accident," she said. "All these thoughts were running through my head. I lost my future -- the man I was in love with, my son's father. Who do I blame?"

David Sklar, 43 and a part of the baby boomer generation, grappled with depression and chronic pain.

In the last 11 years, as more baby boomers entered midlife, the suicide rates in this age group have increased, according to an analysis in the September-October issue of the journal Public Health Reports. –Read more at CNN Health
