Let us say, you bought an airplane ticket, but when you got to your assigned seat you found someone else is in it, what would you do? Certainly, the first thing you would do would be to check your boarding pass to make sure that you are at your assigned seat, and then ask the person in the seat to check his ticket and boarding pass to make sure that he is in the right seat. If he refuses, then you would refer the matter to a flight attendant or the proper airline person in-charge. And if you were asked to show your own ticket, boarding pass. and other travel documents, you would gladly do so to prove that you had indeed paid for a valid ticket, obtained a boarding pass and the proper travel documents. The person in your seat should similarly be willing to produce and show his/her ticket, boarding pass, and legal documents. If the person is neither willing nor able to produce proof that he has the proper documents, he would have to give up the seat, and would have to get off the plane.
A person who does not possess legal travel documents---an airplane ticket, boarding pass, passport and/or visa--- is a "stow away" [an illegal passenger] and would have to be escorted out of the plane.
Applying the above to the US immigration issue, it is clear that before any person could enter and stay in the USA legally, it is his/her responsibility to obtain all the legitimate and proper documents through proper procedure as prescribed and required by US laws and regulations.
It is also clear that it is the responsibility of US government authorities to make sure that before any person is allowed to enter and stay in the USA legally that one must possess and willingly show the legal and proper documents as proof of one's citizenship/immigration status when requested.
Unfortunately, it has now become obvious that because of a combination of lawful disregard and willful violation of US laws by some undesirable elements and/or private and public [government] authorities' having failed to properly do their job of enforcing and implementing the original immigration rules and regulations, it has resulted in millions of "stow ways" [illegal immigrants] entering and/or remaining inside the United States of America.
But instead of the US authorities and misguided social activists admitting that those assigned the task of implementing the law have failed to properly do their job of enforcing the original immigration laws and properly implementing the prescribed immigration procedures, rules and regulations, many government officials and social activists now claim that the rules/regulations should instead be "reformed" [changed]. Moreover, government officials and protesters have decided to not only allow illegal immigrants to remain in the USA but also be entitled to the same privileges and rights accorded to legal US residents and citizens, who legitimately obtained [and properly paid for] their immigration [and/or] citizenship papers and status.
The truth and fact is: no foreigner should [be allowed to] enter or stay inside the USA if he/she can not produce and show legally and properly obtained citizenship or immigration documents.
Now, that Arizona has decided to properly enforce and implement the original immigration laws---procedures, rules and regulations, which private and public authorities failed to do, instead of being appreciated for its efforts, Arizona is now being accused of "racial profiling" and is being ordered to stop the enforcement of those original immigration laws, procedures, rules and regulations.
That is exactly what protesters are doing, including Mayor Gordon of Phoenix, US Representative Grijalva, President Obama and other federal, state, and local officials, who are opposed to Arizona's efforts.
If one is "not in favor of" everyone showing his/her proper legal documents [legitimate proof of citizenship or immigration status] when asked, then one is helping to condone illegal immigration and its related illegal activities.
If one has done nothing illegal and has nothing to hide, one has absolutely no reason to refuse showing one's documents and/or to feel threatened when asked.
