This Weeks Sound Off

Immigration

Immigration reform is increasingly looking like a political albatross that could hurt Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections whether President Obama succeeds or fails in overhauling today's widely disliked system.

After postponing action for a year because of the national economic crisis and a drawn-out debate over health reform, President Obama is being pushed by advocates of comprehensive reform to fulfill the campaign promise he made in 2008.

But a 2010 reform push faces daunting political challenges like solid Republican opposition to key provisions and division among Democrats over both strategy and substance. Democrats facing tough re-election battles in states from Arkansas to North Dakota will be hard-pressed to vote to legalize the status of unauthorized immigrants during an economic downturn.

On the other hand, continuing inaction on the issue could alienate crucial Hispanic voters who helped deliver the White House to Democrats last year. And that could cost Democrats swing congressional seats in Nevada, New Mexico and even Texas.

Latino civil rights groups are pushing the White House to move quickly and aggressively, arguing that a promise is a promise.

“After being on our national agenda for a decade, comprehensive immigration reform's time has come,” said Thomas Saenz, president of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. –Chronicle

I am against any federal legislation that will legitimize current illegals to citizenship. Citizenship is not a given just because one is here without permission, but an earned process. To allow those who are illegally in our country to automatic citenship is simply wrong and is a slap in the face of those who paid their dues in order to become a part of our great country.

I don’t trust the Democrats to deliver a sound immigration policy. Basically, their agenda is to reward those who brake our laws. This is simply an asinine move on their behalf and with elections looming on the horizon, yes!, they should be worried cause I alone, hopefully many of you, will consider this issue and vote for those who will shut down our boarders and pack up the welcome mate to anyone who is illegally in our country. As far as I’m concerned, if you’re here and don’t belong, get the f*%k out of my country. It’s time we take back what is ours and stop being so accommodating to those who are now taking advantage of our generosity and hospitality.

Fannie May/Freddie Mac

Shares of mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac soared Monday after the Treasury Department announced what essentially amounts to a blank check for their bailouts.

Treasury lifted a $200 billion limit on the amount it was ready to pump into each of the two mortgage firms after the markets closed Thursday. Fannie Mae (FNM, Fortune 500) shares leapt 21% Monday to $1.27, while shares of Freddie Mac (FRE, Fortune 500) jumped 27% to $1.60.

While the support from Treasury would appear to be a vote of confidence for the firms, the companies' leaders apparently have no interest in owning the stocks themselves.

According to pay packages disclosed for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Thursday, no stock or options are being issued to any of their top managers. That is unusual for shareholder-owned companies.

Other firms receiving federal bailouts, such as General Motors and American International Group (AIG, Fortune 500) have been pushed by the government to pay their executives with stock.

Both Fannie Mae CEO Michael Williams and Freddie Mac CEO Charles Haldeman were given $6 million annual pay rates for 2009, with all the compensation coming in cash. Other top executives received annual cash payments of $2 million or more each, according to the companies' filings. –CNN

This is simply outrageous! Wonder what’s really going on here. Talk about having the feds in your back pocket.
